How to choose a domain name for your site or blog
If you are trying to make your own self hosted blog, the first step is to choose a domain name for your website. As I have explained in the basic things you need in creating a self hosted blog, you can either choose whether you want your blog in the main directory or in sub-directory of your site. For my bloghob.com, I’ve chose it to be in the main directory of my site.
There are a lot of suffixes or TLD (top level domain) extensions that you can be used in choosing a domain name, it’s based of which type of your site to be made. Here are some of the basic suffix:
- .com – usually for commercial business domain
- .net – for commercial network
- .org – for non-profit organizations
After you have decided which suffix you will use, these steps will help you in making a good brand name for your site or blog:
- Brainstorming – in a white clean paper write the first domain name that you have chosen. Then try thinking something else that is related to the name and the type of site or blog you are planning to make. You could also add some of the parts of speech like the noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjectives etc. to make it more unique and attractive.
- Simplifying – after you have listed the names that you want. Try combining them and end up with the best one of your choice. Keep in mind that your domain name should be simple, memorable, hard to misspelled and related to the type of your site or blog.
- Searching for availability and finalizing - In checking the availability of a domain name, you can always make a Whois on that domain to check if it is already taken by someone else.
- Registration – If you are already sure of which domain name you will use, you can now register that domain in the domain registration site that you choose. Basically the rates are yearly from ranging from 15$ downwards per year. Here are some sites where you can make a domain registration:
