Basically, the purpose of generating a sitemap for your site is to notify search engines that support you sitemap protocol, like Ask.com, Google, MSN search and Yahoo for all the updates that you have made in your site.

The name of the plugin is Google XML sitemap and you can download the plugin here. In Wordpress 2.8, you can now download and automatically upload your sitemap to your admin page.
